Kathleen Krahmer was born in Hillsboro, Oregon. She is truly the “All American Girl”; she was born on a 100-acre farm into a very close family of 9. She has 6 brothers and 2 sisters. The children’s ages ranged from 1 to 20. Kathleen drove a tractor at age 6 and baked apple pies at 8. Kathleen’s parents also came from large families, her father was the oldest of 11 children and her mother came from a family of 9 children. The family raised chickens, dairy cows, pigs and turkeys and grew “row crops” such as strawberries, pumpkins and corn. Family life evolved around work, church and family. Grandma and Grandpa Evers would bring their RV to the farm in strawberry season and take care of the little ones. They would bake, can and work all summer. The family also worked on local farms during the summer and at harvest time. If the family had a “good” harvest year, they would all go on vacation.
All siblings have post high school degrees: Kathleen thought she wanted to be a designer, but found out she was was meant to teach. After a brief marriage, Kathleen was a single mom with a set of 3-year old twins, Mark and Jennifer. She returned to college and worked as a bartender in the Forest Grove Elks Lodge, where she met Ted Krahmer. Ted was smitten; he kept coming in the Lodge with a friend and sent his mother and sister to the Lodge to check out Kathleen. After 6 months, she finally agreed to a date and they dated for the next 2 years. Kathleen and Ted were married on September 1, 1979 and have one daughter, Allison. After finishing college, Kathleen taught in the same school she attended as a child. She spent the next 19 years teaching in Hillsboro.
The family would come to Central Oregon on vacations since Kathleen had 4 siblings here. They spent so much time here; her brothers suggested they move here. Kathleen applied for a job with Bend-La Pine School District and was hired as a primary teacher until her retirement in 2008, but continued to teach for 3 more years.
Kathleen is an avid RV’er; she was wagon master for Bend Elks RV Club for 3 years. She also sews, knits, gardens and does arts and crafts.
Kathleen is a member of Ladies of the Elks and in 2010 became a Lodge member. Ted Krahmer has been an Elk member for 47 years. Kathleen is presently Loyal Knight.
She is the secretary of the LOE and chaired their very successful Luau for the past 2-years. And if this isn’t enough, she also volunteers two days a week at the Lodge. Thursdays you can find her calling Bingo and she is a favorite among the players. On Monday she is a volunteer bartender and hosts “Cocktails with Kathleen”. Be sure to ask her for one of her signature cocktails. Thanks to Kathleen, Mondays in the Lodge Club can be quite busy.
Kathleen does a great job at our Lodge, she is hard working, always smiles, is energetic and never at a loss for words.
